FRESNEL Project: FedeRatEd Secure Sensor NEtwork Laboratory
Computing Laboratory
The Oxford Internet Institute and Oxford University Computing Laboratory have received an EPSRC award to fund a doctoral (D.Phil) studentship for research in application security and privacy enforcement in large-scale federated sensor networks. This research will be conducted by Dr Ian Brown, at the Oxford Internet Institute, in collaboration with Dr Niki Trigoni at the Oxford University Computing Laboratory, and Dr Cecilia Mascolo and Professor Jon Crowcroft at the University of Cambridge.

The studentship is fully funded by EPSRC for three years at the Home/EU level and will include a stipend of £13,290 p.a.

STATKRAFT – has available a 3-year PhD stipend available in the field of
Tidal Turbine Design.

Department of Energy and Process Engineering, NTNU works with problems
related to tidal turbine design, primarily related to the turbine blade
design and hydrodynamic forces acting on the whole tidal turbine. The
department has modern and well-equipped premises on the campus of NTNU in
Trondheim.

STATKRAFT is working with tidal turbines in order to become an operator of
tidal turbine parks in the future and they support NTNU in order to build
knowledge about tidal turbines. STATKRAFT has a branch in Trondheim which
are working with tidal turbines.

A Master of Science (MSc) degree in mechanical engineering, physics, or
applied mathematics is an advantage.

The PhD-candidate will look at the dimensional forces acting on a tidal
turbine. Relevant topics to be addressed are hydrodynamic behavior of the:
Wave-current interaction on the turbine blades
Wake from the water velocity passing the structure of the tidal turbine
Wake from one turbine installed upstream another turbine
Vertical velocity profile
Turbulence

The work will be carried out in close co-operation with other researchers
and PhD-students at the Waterpower Laboratory at NTNU. There are 8 other PhD
candidates working with similar topics related to wind and hydro turbines at
the department. Department of Energy and Process Engineering has about 80
PhD-students working right now.

Conditions of appointment: PhD students follow code 1017, grade 45 – 51,
gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are
normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the
Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment
regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for
scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal
of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are
obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment
requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months
from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for
the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force
concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced

Human Rights Watch, the international human rights monitoring and advocacy or//

ganization, invites applications for its fellowship program. Human Rights Watch is known for its impartial and reliable human rights reporting on over 70 countries worldwide, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in affecting the policy of the US and other influential governments toward human rights abusers.

Who Should Apply: For recent graduates of law schools or graduate programs in journalism, international relations, area studies, or other relevant disciplines from universities worldwide.

Fellowships begin in September 2010.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Fellows work full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch in New York, Washington, D.C., or London. Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world. A few recent examples are: a project on the rights of Iraqi refugees in Syria and Lebanon; on violations of the rights of girls in juvenile custody in New York State; on corporal punishment of children in southern public schools in the US; on the rights of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal and India; on abuses against Sri Lankan migrant domestic workers; and abuses committed in the context of the Naxal conflict in Chhattisgarh state, India.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills, an ability to write and speak clearly, and a commitment to work in the human rights field in the future. Proficiency in one language in addition to English is strongly desired. Familiarity with countries or regions where serious human rights violations occur is also valued. Depending on the fellowship for which they wish to apply, prospective fellows must be recent graduates of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies, or must provide evidence of significant, comparable, relevant work experience (please see our Frequently Asked Questions section for the specific requirements of the various fellowships at http://www.hrw. org/node/ 82286).
